A weekend of art, archaeology, adventure and unique flavours in one of the most beautiful corners of western Sicily between the sea and unspoilt valleys
This four-day tour crosses an important section of this area of Sicily and makes an ideal get away for culture lovers, combining history, archaeology, nature and food The via Selinuntina is an ancient road built by the Greek colonists who had occupied eastern Sicily, to connect their most important colonies. The ancient route linked the city of Syracuse, with ancient Selinunte, which today is an archaeological area of great historical value. At a later stage, the Romans extended the route to the city of Marsala. Today, the SS115 main road partially runs along this ancient route.
The tour begins with a visit to one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Sambuca di Sicilia, founded by the Arabs, who built the Fortress of Al-Zabut, an enchanting historical landmark that dominates the surrounding landscape. The following day features a visit to the Archaeological Park of Selinunte, which whill whisk you back to the classical world and Ancient Greece, which transformed the Mediterranean into the centre of civilization of the then known world.
Day 3 will be dedicated to a visit to Gibellina and its surroundings, destroyed by an earthquake in 1968, which has carved indelible scars on the earth. Then, as if travelling through time, the tour will continue at the Orestiadi Foundation and the great work of land art called "Cretto", by the artist Alberto Burri, transported onto the contemporary art scene, with works of great artistic and symbolic value.
The last day will be dedicated to a tour of the town of Piana degli Albanesi, for yet another insight into the enormous cultural richness and diversity of Sicily, which swings continually between the past and the present. Piana degli Albanesi, in fact, is home to the largest Albanian – or Albëreshë – community in Italy.
Visits to cultural sites will always be interspersed and alternated with food and wine experiences, for a delightful all-round experience that will allow you to get to know this corner of Sicily also from a different viewpoint. The overall richness, variety and originality of the tour will undoubtedly be its key characteristic
