Discover the nature and landscapes of northern Jordan
A unique natural site in terms of floral and faunal diversity, crossed by the second international bird migration route. Located in the far north of Jordan, in a small hilly area around Umm Qais, the Yarmouk forest reserve, by virtue of its location, is affected by the characteristics of the Mediterranean biogeographical zone, with a hot climate in summer and cold in winter
Despite its small size, approximately 20 km2, the area stands out due to its enviable geographical location, characterised by its proximity to the borders with Syria and the Golan Heights and the passage of the Yarmouk River, the largest tributary of the Jordan River, which gives it its name. It is home to 59 documented plant species, including the Decidua Oak, which is Jordan's national tree.
The reserve boasts the presence of almost 100,000 tourists each year, including environmental education, nature guides on the new trails, mountain bike trails, an eco-café and a nature shop selling handmade crafts from local communities.
Established in 2010, the reserve is part of the network of national reserves managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), which runs the Integrated Ecosystem Management in the Jordan Rift Valley project, which aims to establish a network of reserves and special conservation areas in the Jordan Rift Valley region.
