When art and architecture meet spirituality!
One of the most striking landmarks in Aqaba and one of the most beautiful and well-known mosques in Jordan. The Arabic word Sharīf literally means 'elected' or 'respectable'. It became a title given to those who were charged with defending their communities. It is an honorary title of high value that was also used for Hussein Bin Ali, Sharif and Emir of Mecca from 1908 to 1917, to whom this mosque is dedicated.
He declared the beginning of the Great Arab Revolt on 10 June 1916, leading the rebels and organizing the ranks of the army.
His well-known inflexibility and determination were instrumental in turning the revolt into a struggle for independence. He also fought against attempts to fragment and disperse the Arab world, particularly Palestine and Jerusalem.
He was a true leader who paid for his convictions by being exiled from Aqaba in June 1917. After his death in 1933, the Islamic Supreme Council of Jerusalem requested his burial in the Al-Aqsa Mosque in honor of his loyalty to the holy city.
This mosque, dedicated to him, was first built in 1975 and then restored and extended in 2011. The building, a true landmark of Islamic architecture, stands out with its white mass between the souk and the beach. It is considered by the people of Aqaba to be the main religious building in the city, and boasts the largest mosque dome in Jordan.
The green gardens and palm trees at the entrance stand out against the counter of the building. Visitors can walk inside and experience a less conspicuous aspect of city life: a quieter atmosphere. The mosque is located in an area full of attractions: from the beach to the ruins of ancient Ayla.
