A Roman road from the coast into the mountains
An ancestral path This Roman road was built in Lebanon between 64 BCE and 249 CE and stretches from the coast to the Bekaa Plain across the mountains. It was used until the 20th century for economic, religious and military purposes. The section of the Roman Stairs in the JMBR is the longest continuous stretch of Roman stairs in Lebanon: it is over 1,800 m in length and has an impressive width of 2 to 3 meters.
The Roman road was designated a Historic site by the Ministry of Culture in 2012. It has become an ecotourism trail linking the two main entrances of Mchati and Qehmez and is better known as the “Roman Stairs” trail.
In 2020, the APJM carried out rehabilitation works to clear and consolidate the existing structure.
