For two centuries, the L'Idea Theatre has been a vibrant cultural beacon for Sambuca di Sicilia
In the heart of the Sicilian village, the L'Idea Theatre is the result of the skilful work of local craftsmen
The nineteenth century was the era of Italian-style theatres. At a time of great political and cultural ferment, every major city in Sicily endowed itself with a venue for entertainment and meetings: more than eighty were built, including the famous Massimo Theatre and Politeama Theatre in Palermo, the Bellini in Catania and the Regina Margherita in nearby Agrigento.
The municipal theatre called L'Idea was also built in this period, between 1848 and 1851, by a group of citizens, in the heart of Sambuca, by local craftsmen. A masterpiece of Sambuca craftsmanship, it has the classic horseshoe shape, a flattened dome vault, three tiers of boxes and a 264-seat auditorium.
Owned by the municipality since 1886, the theatre has been restored twice in its long history. The most recent, in the early 1970s, repaired the damage caused by the 1968 earthquake.
Today, as in the 19th century, plays and shows take turns on its stage: two centuries later, the L'Idea Theatre is still an essential beacon for the cultural and social life of Sambuca.
