History, culture and typical products in the beautiful Belice Valley and the nearby sea at Triscina
Castelvetrano surprises travellers with its religious buildings and unique food and wine traditions Founded after the arrival of the Normans in an area inhabited since the Palaeolithic, Castelvetrano is now known as the city of olive trees and temples, for the Nocellara trees that adorn its landscape and the nearby Archaeological Park of Selinunte. Walking through the streets of the town you can hear the echoes of almost a thousand years of history.
The old town of Castelvetrano, with its three communicating squares, is a succession of religious and civil buildings of different eras and styles, from the 16th century Mother Church, with its marvellous carved portal, to the Baroque Fontana della Ninfa and then a string of prestigious noble palaces, such as the Ducal Palace, built on the remains of an ancient 13th century castle, and Palazzo Pignatelli, the ancient residence of the Pignatelli Aragona Cortes princes.
